Njeri appointed as Greenpeace Africa Executive Director

PRESS RELEASE

Kenyan born Njeri Kabeberi, has been named as Executive Director for Greenpeace Africa after an extensive search for a combination of skills required to drive the organisation towards a people powered movement.

According to the Greenpeace Africa Board, Africans are hungry for a new story, one with a better take on nature, on humanity, their livelihoods, their future and their connection to the earth. “It was critical to find someone who embodies passion, activism and understands the context of environmental justice in Africa and we are confident that Njeri represents that” said Greenpeace Africa Board Chair Brian Kagoro.

Greenpeace currently runs campaigns on four key issues on the continent, to protect the Congo Basin from large scale deforestation, stop overfishing in West Africa, promote ecological farming in the horn of Africa as well as demand a shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources in South Africa in order to reverse the impacts of climate change.

With a long history in human rights activism, Njeri will be leading Greenpeace Africa into a new wave of environmental justice for Africans by Africans.

“We will continue to work on our flagship campaigns but more so, we shall be working closely with communities to ensure that our campaigns speak to the local realities on the continent and can effect change in the day to day life of our people” said newly appointed Greenpeace Africa Executive Director Njeri Kabeberi.

“Africa has a major role to play in the global efforts to reverse climate change, protecting its vast natural forest and safeguarding its rich ocean resources is centre to the continent’s contribution in averting the catastrophic effects of climate change. It is important that the continent works together to push for an end to illegal logging, unsustainable fishing and a shift from industrial agriculture to ecological farming to ensure that our biodiversity is protected” added Njeri.

Njeri joins Greenpeace after serving as CEO of the Civil Society Reference Group and as the immediate former Executive Director of the Centre for Multiparty Democracy.  She is also a member of the board of advisors of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) and chairs the board of the International Centre for Policy and Conflict.

Njeri is passionate about social justice and women’s rights, and in 2010, amongst others, received the ILO Wedge Award.  She also has extensive INGO leadership and management experience and was on the Board of the Kenya Human Rights Commission for many years.

Enjoy Another #MusicWeDeyFeel Music Monday

Over the few weeks, I have tried taking you round the continent with our beautiful music tunes. This week is no exception.

I know you'll love the countries I picked out for you for this week's #MusicWeDeyFeel post.

This week I am taking you down south to South Africa then we jump a little into Kenya on the East.

Enjoy my picks for this week folks.

1. BUCIE - GET OVER IT - SOUTH AFRICA

If you love house music, Bucie's - Get over It tune featured above should get you kicking your feet and nodding your head to the rhythm. A very simple and beautiful video to go with and that is my first pick for this week.

2. JOSE CHAMELEONE - WALE WALE  - KENYA

I take you to Kenya this week and featuring is Jose Chameleone. I got introduced to this artist through a working colleague and since then, I have become a fan. A typical East African style of music and the video is a very sleek one.

I hope you digg the picks also. Until then, till I come your way next week with another from the continent, have the best of this week.

I CALL HER WOMAN

Sometimes I wish I had the talent of writing to the extreme, especially when it comes to thought provoking pieces of life whichever way it comes. As a matter of fact writing from my personal experiences isn't what I am referring to. That I guess I can pass, so when I see such deep writings from friends I have, I admire them and applaud.
On one of those boring days, a friend dropped this amazing piece in one of my whatsapp group chats and I am of the conviction that I share this. Reason? I am identified and associated to this. There are still some great wonderful women on planet earth. Take a read;

She gives life,
She is a wife,
She is a mother,
She is a friend,
She is a sister,
A survivor to the end......
Appreciating  her,
We never dare...
Asking her worries,
We Don't care...
Please Wipe away her tears,
For they are invisible as air...
She works,
She cooks,
She cleans....
She laughs,
She comforts,
She hides her pain...
And When you struggle,
She pulls you through...
All this she is,
And what do we do??....
Complain,
And create a mess...
Stress her,
And leave her depressed...
Push her away,
Ignoring her advice...
Tell her she is nothing,
Without thinking twice....
She is raped,
Tortured,
And abused.
Told she is nothing,
Always used just for pleasure,
Inconsiderate of her pain...
She swallows her Pride,
Pockets her Ego,
Puts her feelings aside,
Does as you need,
In order for you to be free...
Ignores your ignorance,
Tolerating your flaws.
You call her Bitch,
Slut,
Hoe,
And Tramp....
She answers with humility,
Dignity,
And a complete loss of self....
You call her nothing,
I call her Strong,
Smart,
Sensual,
Caring,
Giving,
Survivor,
Tolerant,
And powerful....
If this piece doesn't change you mind of how you think about women, then I don't think you'll ever change. No matter how things might seem, a lot of love and respect should be accorded the woman.

Another piece from a friend for which I decided I share with you my cherished readers. Thank you Eddy from Kenya for this one and the enlightenment you brought to how courteous a woman can be.

The African Vibe -My Playlist

Music they say is the food for the soul. Well for me it's a refreshing lifestyle which soothes the mind and whole mental framework.

I woke up this morning feeling all music loving, but this time the craving was a little different from the usual, Hip hop, Christian Rock, or even listening to my favorite sports shows.

Over the years I have always loved music from all over the world but not so much from my continent because it was in a way not very much accessible. Thanks to the internet super higher, things seems to have become a little easier now in terms of accessibility.

Over these few weeks I have had a few favorites from the continent no doubt I woke up this feeling all songy songy (If there's a word like that LOL).

Immediately my laptop was on, I started my picking one track to the other and guess what, all the songs that made up the playlist were from my continent of Africa. No doubt this is the playlist for the week.
I therefore decided to share it and if you have even good tunes from any corner from the continent, share it so we also enjoy your music also.

As I mostly say, don't blame me if I love music more than you do. I live by and with it.

My Afro Playlist start now!! The list below is in no particular order or preference anyway. I can mix them up any time in as much as you find all the tunes in the list.

1. Mafikizolo featuring Uhuru - Khona
2. Lira - Feel Good
3. Zahara - Loliwe
4. Efya - Cigarette
5. Camp Mulla - Party Don't Stop
6. Cwesi Oteng - I Win
7. Tiwa Savage featuring Leo Wonder - Ife Wa Gbona
8. Becca featuring M.I. - No Away
9. Asa - Bibanke
10. Blitz The Ambassador - Dear Africa
11. Mensa - Fanti Love Song
12. Darey - Bani Ki Di
13. LiquiDeep - Come Aboard
14. Cleo Ice Queen featuring JK- Big Dreams
15. Cynthia Morgan - High High High ( Kuche Kuche)

Well some of us don't care if the Grammy's, BET's won't respect our music and acts to really give us the needed platform to excel, we the people of Africa will enjoy our good great music to the fullest and we'll reward ourselves by sticking what we have. When they realize it's so big here and they wanna have a price by sampling our hits, then the industry players will tell them their piece of mind some.

Well I don't know how your playlist for this week is or will be, so hey if you don't mind you can share yours and maybe I'll like a tune from yours to enjoy also.

Have the very best of this week as August really breaks out, I wish each and every one the best in all endeavours as well as aspirations.
